Local universities celebrate the return of OUA football
After COVID-19 forced the entire 2020 season to be canceled, Wilfrid Laurier University Golden Hawks and University of Waterloo Warriors hit the grill for their first OUA football game in nearly 700 days .
Saturday marked the start of the 2021 Ontario College Athletics football season.
Laurier won a 37-6 victory over the York Lions in their opener at University Stadium.
“It’s absolutely electric,” said Laurier sports and recreation director Peter Baxter. “The players are delighted. They’ve been through a lot in terms of persistence with the pandemic, training online without their teammates for part of the year. “
Baxter said every player is fully vaccinated on both teams and the college stadium can accommodate around 900 fans while keeping physical distancing and other precautions in place.
“It’s a very complex operation. Everybody must [have] proof of vaccination at the door and make a daily attestation that they can enter safely so that we keep security.
The Waterloo Warriors started their season off on the right foot, beating the Windsor Lancers 42-14 at Warrior Field.
Waterloo and Laurier will face off next week, September 25th.
The University of Guelph begins its season against Western University on September 25.
